The Little Mermaid statue of Copenhagen was created by sculptor Edvard Erichsen, and was gifted to the city in 1913 - a present from Carl Jacobsen.
The Little Mermaid character is taken from the fairytale by Danish author and poet, Hans Christian Andersen. In the true version of the story (NOT Disney), the mermaid never gets her prince, and instead, turns into foam on the waves and disappears forever. Weh.
