Jane Taylor//The Violet
Down in a green and shady bed
A modest violet grew;
Its stalk was bent, it hung its head,
As if to hide from view.
And yet it was a lovely flower,
Its colors bright and fair;
It might have graced a rosy bower,
Instead of hiding there.
Yet there it was content to bloom,
In modest tints arrayed;
And there diffused a sweet perfume,
Within the silent shade.
Then let me to the valley go,
This pretty flower to see;
That I may also learn to grow
In sweet humility.

Cecilia Borromeo//Restless
It is that perennial immateriality dwelling between living and dying
crouched in the corners and grappling by the hinges
only to remain unseen;
We weave our web of what we believe we understand
of the relationship of our acts and events
only to remain misunderstood;
From that odd wisp of steam of heated discussions
to the urgent hiss of a new page calling;
I teeter on that thin ice --
That single space of uncertainty --
And I ask
"What am I doing here?"
crouched in the corners and grappling by the hinges
only to remain unseen;
We weave our web of what we believe we understand
of the relationship of our acts and events
only to remain misunderstood;
From that odd wisp of steam of heated discussions
to the urgent hiss of a new page calling;
I teeter on that thin ice --
That single space of uncertainty --
And I ask
"What am I doing here?"

LB//AnInsomniacDreams//WhatDoesItMean?
So I had a dream last night...
You, M and I were eating Indian food that we had to microwave in one of about 30 machines in this cafeteria-like room. We were sitting dead-center in the middle of the food, and you and M were discussing how delicious the food was and that you loved the irony of this place, and I was grossed out. I couldn't figure out where O was and then I saw him sitting in a booth in the far corner. He looked mad and I knew I was in trouble for something, but instead of going to talk to him I started and impromptu dance party on the tables... this went on for some time to hits like Sweet Child O' Mine, Our Lips are Sealed, and Material Girl. We had decided to leave when two flamboyantly gay men came running in, handed me a half-eaten load of bread and shrieked, "CONGRATULATIONS!" while hugging and jumping up and down, and then they handed me their keys and asked me to watch their house while they were in Greece.
This occurred during the only 40 minutes of sleep I got last night.

CharlesSimic//CloudsGathering
It seemed the kind of life we wanted.
Wild strawberries and cream in the morning.
Sunlight in every room.
The two of us walking by the sea naked.
Some evenings, however, we found ourselves
Unsure of what comes next.
Like tragic actors in a theater on fire.
With birds circling over our heads,
The dark pines strangely still,
Each rock we stepped on bloodied by the sunset.
We were back on our terrace sipping wine.
Why always this hint of an unhappy ending?
Clouds of almost human appearance
Gathering on the horizon, but the rest lovely
With the air so mild and the sea untroubled.
The night suddenly upon us, a starless night.
You lighting a candle, carrying it naked
Into our bedroom and blowing it out quickly.
The dark pines and grasses strangely still.
Wild strawberries and cream in the morning.
Sunlight in every room.
The two of us walking by the sea naked.

MaryOliver//TheJourney
One day you finally knew
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice--
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug
at your ankles.
"Mend my life!"
each voice cried.
But you didn't stop.
You knew what you had to do,
though the wind pried
with its stiff fingers
at the very foundations,
though their melancholy
was terrible.
It was already late
enough, and a wild night,
and the road full of fallen
branches and stones.
But little by little,
as you left their voices behind,
the stars began to burn
through the sheets of clouds,
and there was a new voice
which you slowly
recognized as your own,
that kept you company
as you strode deeper and deeper
into the world,
determined to do
the only thing you could do--
determined to save
the only life you could save.
what you had to do, and began,
though the voices around you
kept shouting
their bad advice--
though the whole house
began to tremble
and you felt the old tug

NaomiShihabNye//SoMuchHappiness
it is difficult to know what to do with so much happiness
with sadness there is something to rub against,
a wound to tend with lotion and cloth.
when the world falls in around you, you have pieces to pick up,
something to hold in your hands, like ticket stubs or change.
but happiness floats.
it doesn't need you to hold it down.
it doesn't need anything.
happiness lands on the roof of the next house, singing,
and disappears when it wants to.
you are happy either way.
even the fact that you once lived in a peaceful tree house
and now live over a quarry of noise and dust
cannot make you unhappy.
everything has a life of its own,
it too could wake up filled with possibilities
of coffee cake and ripe peaches,
and love even the floor which needs to be swept,
the soiled linens and scratched records...
since there is no place large enough
to contain so much happiness,
you shrug, you raise your hands, and it flows out of you
into everything you touch. you are not responsible.
you take no credit, as the night sky takes no credit
for the moon, but continues to hold it, and to share it,
and in that way, be known.

Osho//Playfulness
the moment you start seeing life as non-serious,
a playfulness, all the burden on your heart disappears.
all the fear of death, of life, or love - everything disappears.
one starts living with a very light weight or almost no weight.
so weightless one becomes, one can fly in the open sky.
the woman in the card is celebrating the joy of being alive, like a butterfly that has emerged from its chrysalis into the promise of light. she reminds us of the time when we were children , discovering seashells on the beach or building castles in the sand without any concern that the waves might some and wash them away in the next moment. she knows that life is a game, and she's playing the part of a clown right now with no sense of embarassment or pretense.
when the Page of Fire enters your life, it is a sign that you are ready for the fresh and the now. something wonderful is just on the horizon, and you have just the right quality of playful innocense and clarity to welcome it with open arms.

MaryOliver//Bone
1.
Understand, I am always trying to figure out
what the soul is,
and where hidden,
and what shape
and so, last week,
when I found on the beach
the ear bone
of a pilot whale that may have died
hundreds of years ago, I thought
maybe I was close
to discovering something
for the ear bone
2.
is the portion that lasts longest
in any of us, man or whale; shaped
like a squat spoon
with a scoop where
once, in the lively swimmer's head,
it joined the two sisters
in the house of hearing,
it was only
two inches long
and thought: the soul
might be like this
so hard, so necessary
3.
yet almost nothing.
Beside me
the gray sea
was opening and shutting its wave-doors,
unfolding over and over
its time-ridiculing roar;
I looked but I couldn't see anything
through its dark-knit glare;
yet don't we all know, the golden sand
is there at the bottom,
though our eyes have never see it,
nor can our hands ever touch it
4.
lest we would sift it down
into fractions, and facts
certainties
and what the soul is, also
I believe I will never quite know.
Though I play at the edges of knowing,
truly I know
our part is not knowing,
but looking, and touching, and loving,
which is the way I walked on,
softly,
through the pale-pink morning light.
